Tree Pruning

As highlighted below, trees can be pruned in various ways to help solve issues with safety and light to property, etc.

Crown Lift

Crown lifting is the removal of the lower branches to increase the distance between the base of the canopy and ground level.

Crown lifting gives statutory clearances to the highway and footpaths. Crown lift can also be used to give more light to adjacent properties and surrounding areas such as gardens and borders.

Crown Thin

Retain the shape of the tree whilst reducing the density of the canopy. This allows more light through the canopy and reduces the ‘sail’ effect in the wind.

It must be noted that is does not change the overall size or shape of the tree.

Crown Clean

Crown cleaning or dead wooding is the removal of dead, diseased, dying and/or crossing branches. Crown clean is carried out for safety and to improve the tree’s appearance.

If your location permits it, it is important to remember that dead wood is an essential habitat for a large number of organisms in the ecosystem in which the tree lives. The formation of dead wood within the crown of a tree is part of the natural system of tree life and should not be considered to be a negative thing that has to be removed to maintain healthy tree growth.

Crown Reduction

Crown reduction can also be carried out on just one limb to reduce the risk of heavy limbs failing.

This technique can be used to reduce wind resistance, control the size of the tree in restricted environment or to allow more light through.

Formative Pruning

Formative pruning is the selective pruning of a young tree to promote good future shape and habit typical of that tree species. This would normally include the removal of multiple leaders and crossing/rubbing branches. Formative pruning helps to train young, developing trees to produce a framework of strong, evenly spaced stems or branches. Formative pruning helps reduce any structural problems in later life.
